Bible Literacy Class Starts New Study
On June 14 Larry and Sharon began a study Wide Angle, Framing your Worldview by Charles Colson and Rick Warren. It is a 6 video series. So far the response has been excellent. The study starts off with the explanation of what a worldview is and who has a worldview. We all do, of course. Your worldview contains the beliefs you build your life on and determines how you view everything: God, people, life and death, good and evil, pain and suffering, the past, present and future. So It is important that we know what we as Christians hold as a worldview and how it differs from the worldview of the “world” and nonbelievers. The session titles include 1. My Worldview Matters. 2. How Do We Know What’s True? 3. Where Did We Come From? 4. It’s a Messed Up World. 5. What’s the Solution? 6. What Do I Do Now? Continue to pray for us and the men as we present this study to them every Sunday afternoon.
Teach me to Pray
We are going to start a new study at Dixon CC on prayer. It was a request from some of the men…”Teach Me To Pray in 28 Days” by Kay Arthur. We were able to purchase books for each of the participants and ill be showing Kay Arthur’s DVD that goes along with the study. It’s a 4 week class, but I have a feeling that we will stretch it out for a couple of more weeks – especially with the input we usually get from the class. Keep us in prayer!!
The Purpose Driven Life
On December 28 we started the study – The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. We will be listening to the 20 minute DVD and going through a workbook at that time, with discussion time afterwards. God laid this study on Larry’s heart and provided the finances to purchase the books and DVD to share this with the men at Dixon. Praise God!! It’s a great group. We have about 15 men signed up for this now. I just got word that Dixon was on lock-down, so we are not sure if we will be able to go in tomorrow (Sun Jan 11). I am not sure why it is on lockdown – hopefully it is just because of the weather and will be open again by tomorrow. Keep us in prayer as we go through this book. Please keep all the men at Dixon CC in prayer – especially the Christians on the inside who daily witness to their fellow inmates!
True Financial Freedom
On December 13 we completed a 13 week class on Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University in the Dixon CC. We started out with 17 in the class and 15 graduated. On graduation day Pastor Eric Kersten(pictured with Larry Davis ) from Calvary Lighthouse church in Rochelle visited the class and gave a few words of encouragment to the men graduating. Eric said he really enjoyed being there, and the men all seemed to enjoy getting to know Eric. It was so good to see all the men graduate with a positive attitude from this class, and we will miss each and every one of them. They will be released soon. Keep them in prayer!
Missionaries visit Dixon Bible Class!
On Saturday November 29, 2008, Michael and Andrea Erickson, missionaries located in San Pablo City, Lacuna, Philippines, visited the Prison Fellowship Ministry Bible study. They shared stories from their experiences with Face The Children, part of the Philippine Frontline Ministries. Their work involves working mostly with the orphanage/rescue center in San Pablo City, where they work directly with the children and have administrative duties as well. But they also spend a lot of their time working in the church and school associated with Frontline. Mike leads worship and often gets opportunities to preach. Andrea is a teacher and teaches English in the school. They shared stories of victories and some sad occasions as well. But in all cases, the gospel of Jesus Christ was given out in word and in practice. The response from the men was amazing, as they supported them in prayer and blessings for their ministry. They are pictured above with their 2 year old son Josiah.
Catch up time
Well it has been awhile since I’ve been in here, so I have to catch everone up on what has been going on.
1. First of all, exciting news from Dixon: In June Alan Beaman, a true born-again Christian, and great asset to our Bible class, was released. He won his appeal for a new trial! Then in November Roger Burns, was released on parole. Roger also spent the last 20 years searving the Lord inside the prison. We rejoice with both of them and we will keep them on our prayer list.
2. Then, in October, we had the opportunity to go into Stateville Correctional Center at the invitation of Prison Fellowship. Larry conducted a True Financial Freedom study as a 1 day seminar. We had 17 present and the participation by eah was great. If we had any complaints – it was that the time went by too fast! We are looking forward to more opportunities in the future to Stateville or other correctional centers.
3. Also, in Dixon, every Thursday morning, we began a 14 week financial study using material from Dave Ramsey. We feel that it is a great blessing and a privilege that we are able to do this study as well as our Sunday Bible study at Dixon. This will end in the middle of December. We were able to provide workbooks for 18 participants. The study consists of an hour long DVD by Dave Ramsey after which we have another hour of discussion with the group. This has been well received and some have even asked us when we are giving the next class so they also can benefit from the study. We offered to only those residents who are going to be going home in the next 6 to 12 months and our hope is that the Lord will provide so we can continue this study on an ongoing basis. It is a life-skill that each resident will be able to utilize on the outside as they begin their new life.
4. In our Bible Literacy Class on Sunday afternoons – we are winding down on our 30 Principles of Christian Living series. We have been using a work book by Charles Stanley. We are in our 28th week and will finish up this month – November.
5. Angel Tree is soon approaching and Calvary Lighthouse will again be participating. This is a great outreach to children and families of those incarcerated in correctional centers all across the nation. This is a program where church members can help incarcerated Moms and Dads reach out to their children and let them know they are loved. Also it is a great way for the church to reach out to the whole family and show Christ’s love.
Great Training at Wheaton College!!!
Sharon Davis recently attended the Foundations of Correctional Ministries at the School for Correctional Ministries at Wheaton College. There were approximately 27 people in the Foundations class and 9 in the Advanced class for a total attendance of 36 people from all over the United States and even one gentleman from India. It was a great time of networking with other volunteers, Chaplains and prison ministry coordinators from around the country. The intructors were excellent: Dr Tom Beckner, Dr. Karen Swanson, Dr. Wyatt Mullinax and Dr. Manuel Cordero. Course subject matter included the History of Corrections, Introduction to the Justice System, Causes of Crime, Effective Witness in CM, Dysfunctional Thinking, Gateway to Thinking Errors, Inmate feelings/perspective, Dynamics of Incarceration, Engaging the Culture, and much more. We also received instructions on teaching the Study “Free From The Inside” . This Foundations course is, in my opinion, a “must do” for those involved in prison ministry. There is so much information incorporated into it which I am still processing and plan to implement into the ministry! For anyone interested in this class next year, please check out the Wheaton College website and check on the ACTS ministry training.
Pontiac visit for May
Stan and Sharon were the only two from this area that were able to attend the monthly cell-by-cell visits. There were 10 additional volunteers from other areas. It was a great day, the weather was beautiful, the officers were pleasant and helpful, and the residents were very receptive to the Word of God — all went very well. We were on the East Gallery by 9:45 am. After lunch we all went to West Gallery and were able to stay until 2:30. There was at least 1 decision for Christ, and many other seeds planted. It is always difficult to leave the gallery when we know there is such a need and desire for discipling. However, Phil, and others from various areas go on different dates to do rounds, so the Word reaches them throughout the month.
Dixon CC Re-entry Summit
Larry Davis and Dan were asked to take part in the Dixon CC Re-entry Summit on Thursday May 9. Larry presented Crown Financial Ministry, summarizing how to handling money God’s way and Dan spoke on savings and investment. This was a 2 day summit and there were several vendors that spoke, giving them the opportunity to investigate various programs and encouraging the residents to participate in these opportunities prior to and upon release. Tables were set up after the Summit and Larry, Sharon and Dan handed out Money Maps to each person stoppping by the table. We also had a great lunch – taco salad – prepared by the culinary class
Dixon Bible Study Themes for 2008
Our list of themes for the Dixon Bible study is below. Remember that these are not just topics to handle loosely, but real issues that affect those who are incarcerated.
